Pilates: a system of exercises using special apparatus, designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, and posture, and enhance mental awareness.
(l-r owner Laura Gray and studio manager Maggie Gainey)
As a stay-at-home mom of 3 for 15 years with a degree in English from UGA (which she wasn't sure of what to do with), Laura decided that she needed to find something outside of her family life that fulfilled her. Something that was all her own.
That's when Pilates entered the story.
"I discovered Classical Pilates and realized how wonderful it is for any type of body; from the athlete, to the person with back pain who just came out of rehab for an injury, to the person who is just starting to exercise for the first time."
Laura was eager to share the benefits of Pilates with others so she decided to get comprehensively certified. What does that mean? Comprehensively certified means that Laura is trained on all apparatus and at all levels. As she was telling me her story, and the history of Pilates, I was quite impressed. Laura and all of her staff have extensive backgrounds and complete continuing education courses regularly. It's clear that everyone at Milton Pilates is passionate about what they do and how they can help others.
Speaking of the staff, owner Laura, instructors Lillie, Margie and Dana as well as studio manager Maggie all live right here in Milton or Alpharetta.

When it comes to a small business with local connections, Milton Pilates is certainly connected to its community. The staff at this gym are literally right around the corner! They are able to help neighbors achieve their fitness goals and improve their quality of life; no matter the age, body type, or experience.
How has COVID affected Milton Pilates?
"As a fitness facility, we have been extremely affected by the pandemic with about half of our clientele deciding to hit pause on their Pilates training for now."
Laura and her staff have always carefully cleaned each piece of apparatus after each use, well before COVID came into the picture; however, they have now instituted new guidelines to be as COVID safe as possible. For example, the number of people in the studio at one time is limited and each piece of apparatus is at least 6 feet apart. And, I loved this part, there is a smaller (gorgeous) studio in back for those individuals who may prefer not working out with others.
Laura says she's seen an increase in clients who have chosen Milton Pilates instead of a larger gym because they feel that it is a safer environment. The staff are excited to welcome back their past clients and can't wait to meet their new Pilates friends soon!
So? What is Laura's superpower of choice?
"I would love to have the power to heal; be it weight loss, back pain, sports injury or muscular conditions".
She truly believes, just as creator Joseph Pilates believed, that the practice of intentional movement, even intentional breathing, is healing. Since Laura doesn't have a magic wand to make all of this happen? She uses Pilates instead.
